Our story began with something simple, yet vital; the water flowing through the rice fields…
Long before it became a retreat, this land was already alive with purpose. But in Karangasem, one of Bali’s poorest regions, challenges often outpaced opportunity. When the pandemic arrived, many Manggis locals who had worked in tourism returned home only to find the fields dry, the crops failing, and the future uncertain.
In 2019, alongside the local banjar and Bali Rare Paduraksa (BRP), we began to restore the land and support the residents. Our first step was helping fix the broken irrigation system. With water came life. As the rice paddies revived, the community leaders shared their dream of switching to organic farming and asked for our help. Their vision inspired us and our partnership quickly took root.
We forecast that within 10 years, Kaura will return over USD 3 million to the local community through wages, land leases, and the rich, cultural experiences we share with guests like you.
So, when you wake to birdsong and the sound of fresh water flowing through the paddies, let it remind you that your stay is part of something bigger. You are helping a village grow stronger with every sunrise.
Kaura began in Bali. Next, we’ll grow alongside new rural communities across Southeast Asia; one retreat, one village, one shared legacy at a time.
A place where you can get your hands dirty, awaken to the scent of rice fields after rain and form lifelong memories around campfires.
